As well as delivering the best patient care that they can, health providers must update their environments and install the latest technologies to ensure they can do so efficiently and cost effectively.
Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in West Yorkshire, which is part of the Calderdale NHS Trust, has been working with partners for many years to update existing operating theatres and open new ones to improve the range and quality of its care at the heart of their local communities.
As part of this programme Service Design Partnership (SDP) has been working alongside construction partners, Interserve, to design and build three new ultra clean operating theatres for the Huddersfield Royal Hospital.
The work has been complex. Superbugs are increasingly resistant to existing treatments and medicines therefore new technologies have had to be incorporated in hospitals to combat their threat to patient healthcare.
Procedures and processes cannot stand still. Clinicians are always keen to embrace proven new technologies to improve patient outcomes in cardiology and oncology but this puts strain on existing systems.
As the Consulting Engineers on the projects we have been able to call on our combined team skills of expertise and our understanding of new technologies such as BIM and CYMAP to create sustainable M&E designs that will ensure high quality now and long into the future within a tight timeline and to budget.
Each new ultra clean operating theatre has been at an investment of in excess of £1million, however thanks to our expertise and understanding of healthcare needs we have been able to ensure that the trust will enjoy a Return on Investment (ROI) long into the future while patients can experience the very best healthcare close to home.
Ultra clean theatres mean that the NHS Trust can provide more operations of a higher complexity at a higher standard to more people.
